Panerai did an impressive job with their Ceramic compound, but an even more impressive job with their work on the dial making the PAM 348 a really cool looking timepiece. You might not know this, but Panerai has a special form of single axis tourbillon that spins on a diagonal axis each 30 seconds that makes it much more fun to watch. Inside the watch is the in-house made Panerai P.2005/S movement. It is manually wound with a 6 day power reserve (power reserve indicator is located on the rear of the watch). Let's talk functions now. Of course there is the time, but there are also two subsidiary dials (again the power reserve indicator on the back of the watch as well). The main hands are also accompanied by the GMT hand. It is easy to read, but I would have liked Panerai to include a dedicated scale for the GMT hours around the bezel or flange of the watch. The left subsidiary dial is for the small seconds and well as a little dot that moves around the dial each 30 seconds - this indicates the movement of the tourbillon. The right subsidiary dial is an AM/PM indicator, which is essentially a synchronized 24 hour hand for the main time. All useful functions, with the neat little tourbillon dot thrown in the mix. By the way, that dot was originally added because the original watch with the caliber P.2005 movement did not have an exposed tourbillon on the dial so Panerai wanted to remind you that it was there.

Unlike most skeletonized watches the dial is really easy to read. Panerai made sure that all the necessary markers are there and with bright lume applied to them. As such, there is no real part of the skeletonization that makes it difficult to read. You can tell from the images of the watch that I am wearing that it is a good looking timepiece with lots of utility. Note that is a pre-production model that I handled a lot so there are lots of finger smudges on the front and rear of the watch.

This collection of watches really surprised me. I've always like Muhle Glashutte watches (no I am not going to dig out the "u" with the two little dots over it, but you know it should be there), but not really like enough to discuss them in an excited manner. That is different with the Terranaut collection. Actually it is funny cause it is a decidedly "land" based watch for a maker of "nautical instruments." I will forgive them for that. The Terranaut is segmented into three version, the I, II, and III. I and II are my top picks with III being OK, but not as nice. Each of the watches comes in a 44mm wide (40mm for the Terranaut III) sanitized steel case that is between about 10-13mm thick (depending on the version).

There are few very watches at this price level with bracelets that look at soon. The wide brushed steel links have a high quality feel, and aren't too thin either (yes, I am talking to you Seiko). The deployment clasp has a triple locking feature that is sturdy and feels nice. Plus, you'll appreciate how the links are bushed on the top and bottom, and polished on the sides - a very good look. I like the Orient engraving on the bottom of the clasp. Another feature you don't see too often on watches at this price point. You'll notice the thick screw-down caseback which helps the 40mm wide case to sit at a good level above the wrist. Size of the watch is perfect for the look being comfortable yet masculine. Being water resistant to 200 meters, you can easily do most diving with the watch easily. The crown and pusher at 2 o'clock are both screw-down as well.

Seiko has a few hand engraved watches as well. Seiko has a few in-house engraving masters that have developed techniques that beat those of the Europeans. Only difference is that some of the designs are pretty traditional Japanese. So now Seiko needs to take those skills, and apply some more globally appealing designs. The techniques that Seiko uses require engraving tools made by Seiko that are more precise, cut better, and result in a much better polish and clean look to the polishing. It is quite remarkable. A beautiful gold Seiko watch all hand engraved with a manufacture movement will run about ,000 as I understand. You’ll never find a similar Swiss watch at this price.

Richard Marcinko is proud to put his name on the watch, as it satisfies his highly demanding needs (and personality). In two colors with a series of available straps or a metal bracelet, there is one for any highly demanding adventurer or military personnel. What is the most impressive is how Rogue Warrior Watches was able to keep down the prices. Unlike most watch makers who make hardcore rugged watches, Rogue Warrior Watches understands that people with average budgets need to afford the watches. The Red Cell watches start at 0 (on a rubber, velcro bund, or camo leather strap), or 0 on a matching metal bracelet. Interestingly, the DLC coated watches are the same price. For all that you get, the price is extremely friendly if I may say. The watches come in a nice presentation box, and are for the (real or metaphorical) blood thirsty, bad-ass, plane jumping, soldier of fury in us all (that need a good watch to go along with the job).

It wouldn't be an artist's watch if it didn't come in a heap of colors. Currently, six colors are available, each with matching gradient dials. The black and white colored watches come on textured black silicon rubber straps, while the rest come on straps matching the color of the case. The straps are comfy to wear and come with a folding clasps that should be as secure as you'd need with the watch. It creates a relatively smooth and seamless look. The downside is that initially you need to cut the strap to size it. This makes it hard to share watches, but additional straps are probably inexpensive to get from i-toc.

Patek Philippe Complications watches

There is another trendy area that Linde Werdelin is nodding at with the SpidoLite - gray watches. The SpidoLite is a decidedly gray watch as you can see in the dial and the case. The dial is interesting. You have the skeletonized hands (that still have SuperLumiNova on them), and the various pieces of the dial. Still, part of the dial design gives you markers for the hours and minutes, so you can still read the time. The SpidoLite isn't quite as legible as other Linde Werdelin pieces, but you'll spend more time admiring the watch itself than relying on it for the time. The case and watch are not flashy, so don't expect that. Rather, they are visually interesting and unlike anything you have seen before, I promise. As is the case with all Linde Werdelin watches, the BiFormeter case and strap style make for a very comfortable wearing experience. I really can't stress that enough. On the SpidoLite, Linde Werdelin places a fabric style strap with a titanium push-button operated folding deployment. To match the skeletonziation of the case, the strap has three rectangular pieces cut out on each side. I've handled a few Linde Werdelin watches, each with a different strap material, and they feel comfortable each time. What I like is that you can wear them tight or a bit loose, and they are still highly compatible with comfort. Despite the avant garde nature of the design, the SpidoLite is still a hard watch with double sapphire crystals and 300 meters of water resistance. I don't think that Linde Werdelin would ever release a watch no matter how interesting it might look, that didn't satisfy the basic "adventure watch" requirements.

On the back of the watch you can see the exhibition back of the case (which itself is secured via four screws) The dial crystal and rear crystal are both sapphire. The movement decoration was the first thing about the Perrelet A1021/3 that greatly impressed me. The decoration is thorough and unique to Perrelet. There is a skeletonized automatic rotor with a piece of gold attached to the back (for weight). The center of the rotor has the Perrelet logo engraved on it. Around the edge of the movement lies perlage polishing, and the movement use blued screws. Now the best movement decoration is located on most of the exposed movement plate and are a repeating pattern of Perrelet "P" logos. Giving it a quick glance and it may look like a floral pattern, but you'll notice the clever branding upon closer inspection. For some reason the area immediately below the balance wheel is not decorated, but it is not a big issue as the overall movement viewing experience is quite positive.I am not quite sure what the movement is inside of the watch. Perrelet recently purchased movement maker Soprod, but I think that most of their movements are currently from Swiss ETA. I am pretty sure that this watch is maybe a base ETA 2836 that has been modified as well as given a power reserve indicator, though I am not sure, whatever the case, it is a automatic mechanical Swiss movement.

I was asked to write an article making an "argument for Rolex watches." This was to be in response to an article which was an "argument against Rolex watches." Now, understand I didn't know what the argument against Rolex watches was going to be, so I simply needed to make a broad and effective argument in favor of the world's most ubiquitous luxury watch. For what ever you can say against Rolex, a ridiculous amount of owners and fans can't be that wrong. I wouldn't go so far as to say Rolex could be the only watch brand you need to look at, but they do have a lot of merit.

The look of the dial is simple, but evocative of the era and easy to read. Truly a 70s design that isn't obnoxiously 70s. The lume covered hands are a bit simplistic - reminding me of those on an Omega Speedmaster Professional, but are accurate representations of those that were popular in the 1970s. The 30 minute chronograph looks easy to view as well. Each of the two models will be available as a limited edition of 1,860 pieces each. Not sure about price, but it has been rumored to be pretty high at ,500 per watch for the limited edition Tag Heuer Silverstone. Release is due in February of 2010. You can likely get one of these Tag Heuer watches at The Watch Gallery, who seems to get most new Tag Heuer watches very soon after they are released.

For the opposite of night viewing, Rogue Warrior Watches throws in a special black shroud strap with the watch. Developed by the Israeli military, these special black coverings can be placed over the watch and have a Velcro shroud over the watch. During stealth night missions, you can't have anything that unintentionally glows or is reflective. For this reason, the Red Cell watch can be worn with this covering for total stealth.

Seiko Luxury Watches Inside the Manufacture

Cargo will feature a few Fortis watches in the movie, but these two limited edition ones are the most interesting and have the name of the movie in them! The more basic watch is the Fortis Cargo Limited Edition Spacematic. It comes in a limited edition of just 2012 pieces and has the title of the movie right on the dial. The watch is in sandblasted steel and 40mm wide. Movement is a Swiss automatic, and probably the ETA 2836. It has a sapphire crystal, rubber strap and 200 meters of water resistance. The revolving Arabic numerals are large, and Fortis here is at their best when it comes to that black/white high contrast dial look that makes them easy to read. An attractive watch fit for a spaceship crew member.

Another part of enamel work is the various type of engraving that is involved. Engraving the metal substrate before the enamel is applied is called "Champlevé," which is a very common type of enamel work done on watch dials. There each area that is engraved must be baked separately, but the results can be beautiful. There are other types of engravings that can be done. This can be manually done with tools, or via acid solutions. I don't specifically know whether engravings take place before or after the enamel is baked - or during both times.

Each watch is a little bit different in size and from about 40-41mm wide in 18k white gold. Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic movement with the time being displayed on the disc through the window. As you can imagine, each watch done with this level of effort (how long do you think it takes the artist to paint each dial? A long time) is exhausting, so the collection is limited in production, though I am not aware of exactly how many pieces. One of the things that I like about this collection from Angular Momentum is that  only a few people in the world are not only going to have this type of watch, but are going to be interested in this type of watch. Eventually watches such as this are going to be in museums for future generations to speculate about. They will wonder about the types of people that purchased timepiece like that, and the social circles that they were worn in. Prices for the watches is likely to be around ,000 each.

So does Mr. Obama like his Vulcain Anniversary Heart watch? I'd like to think so. I don't know when he will wear it. In fact I would bet that like many of you, he's never even heard of the company until he got the watch. Oh, and I don't want to hear anything about "it is not legal for him to accept gifts" There are loopholes to that, and I am sure that after doing this for 50 years, Vulcain has found out about them.

One the rear of the watch is the most important phrase. There is engraved "For Black Belt Only," apparently in rose gold. To me, it is a lot like those cheesy hats that remark "I am number 1." At least here it is hidden on the back. If there was ever a watch that was based on emotion, it is this. I don't know how many black belts there are in the world, but if you see someone with this watch, ask them to prove it to you. I suppose the alternative is wearing your black belt on the exterior of your clothes all the time. So to the kick-ass nation out there, get yourself one of these watches. Cause if you went through all the work of getting a black belt, you want people to know! Price for this watch actually isn't too bad given Arpa's track record. You can "apply" to get one for the retail price of 3,000 Swiss Francs.
